Loaded Dice"Erol, what's that?"
I sit on a wooden bus stop bench, picking off flakes of blue paint with my nails. My surroundings are just barely illuminated by the light fixed into the nearby bus stop sign. Across the four lane highway I can see the dark shadow of an unlit building. Erol sits next to me, fiddling with something and passing it from hand to hand.
He lays the object flat in his palm and holds it out for me to see. It's a red six-sided die with a few nicks along the edges, and some of the white dots have been scratched out. It looks old, real old.
"I used to have two of these. Lost its twin somewhere down south."
Bird of HappinessThere's blood on the ground. There's blood on my dress. There's blood on my hands.
I shift in her arms, try to pinpoint where the blood is coming from.
I put my hands against her chest, and blood rises out to meet me.
I scream, try to plug the bleeding but the hole is too large and my hands are too tiny.
Someone grabs me around my waist, trying to pull me free from my mother's arms. I don't see who it is. All I see is blood. Blood on the ground. Blood on my dress. Blood on my hands.
The bus drops me off down the road. No one bothers to walk me to the gates. I'm terrified, and it knots up in my he
BentIt's a beautiful Friday that promises more good weather to come, and Nico Minoru has decided to spend the afternoon hidden within the depths of the local public library. A massive thesaurus lays across her lap and the Staff of One, summoned after an accidental paper cut, leans up against the back of the wooden chair. She thought about dismissing the Staff of One, but enthusiastic admiration from a pair of high school girls made her change her mind.
Victor took Molly and Klara out to shop for groceries, which will hopefully help Klara adjust to the ways of her new life. Chase is...doing something to the Leapfrog. He said that he would be maki
The Hazy PastIt's cold in the house, and I feel so tired that I could die.
There are reasons for those two things of course. The temperature is always low because chinchillas overheat (Twenty-five degrees Celsius, eighty degrees Fahrenheit. I remember that. But who told me?) and I wouldn't want that. As for my tiredness, well lately I've been having such terrifying nightmares that I don't want to sleep. I don't even remember what I dream about, but I do know that this is the better option.
Sasha's soft fur is comforting to touch. I can feel his chest rising up and down with every breath. Sleepy little thing. It's funny that a chinchilla, which can so ea
Where Freedom RunsWe fall from dreams where freedom runs
Cast away by angry guns
I hold you breathless in my hand
A fate we never could have planned
If you need my heart then say it true
I'll always hold it safe for you
As I shape the world that we burn
But take my promise to return
I love you always, never fear
I'll find you soon within a year
So take my promise, know it well
Let it trap you within its spell
A Letter in a Book"H, I, J, K, K, K..."
I click my tongue as I move across the row of Ks, running a finger across the plastic covered spines.
I backtrack along the row for a bit before finding the book that I somehow missed the first time.
"Here we go. The Art of Romance by Nicholas Kirby. Why am I supposed to read this, exactly?"
No one answers of course, which is probably just as well. Nevertheless I pull the hardcover reinforced library binding book from its resting place and carry it over to one of the carols nestled into this corner of the library, joining the other readers of semi-pointless non-fiction. When I sit the book up on the length
